The University of Oxford has become the first UK institution to provide its students and staff with access to ChatGPT Edu, an education-focused version of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) tool. This rollout follows a successful year-long trial period and marks a significant step in the university’s digital transformation journey.
This initiative is part of a broader five-year partnership between Oxford and OpenAI, announced earlier this year in March.
**Digital Transformation at Oxford**
Professor Anne Trefethen, Oxford’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Digital, described the introduction of ChatGPT Edu as an “exciting step in our ongoing process of digital transformation.” She emphasized the immense potential of this technology to accelerate high-impact research and foster innovation across disciplines.
“All our students will be able to utilize ChatGPT Edu as an accessible tool for study,” Prof. Trefethen added.
**Enhanced Security and University-Focused Design**
ChatGPT Edu has been specifically designed for university environments, offering enhanced privacy and security features. This ensures that data remains securely within each institution.
The university-wide launch follows a successful pilot scheme that involved around 750 academics, students, and staff from diverse roles across Oxford and its colleges.
**Equipping the Oxford Community with AI Skills**
Jayna Devani, OpenAI’s International Education Lead, praised Oxford’s initiative, stating it is “setting a new standard for how AI can enrich higher education.”
By providing universal access to ChatGPT Edu, Oxford is equipping its students and staff with essential AI skills and tools needed for the future.
Alongside the access to ChatGPT Edu, the university will also offer training sessions to help users make the most of this powerful tool.

Oxford’s adoption of ChatGPT Edu reflects a growing recognition of AI’s transformative role in education, research, and innovation. This move positions the university at the forefront of integrating advanced technology to enhance learning and academic excellence.
