Twisted Pixel & Sanzaru Games shutting down amid Meta Reality Labs layoffs
Several Meta Reality Labs studios are reporting firings this week, with some studios apparently closing outright. Among those confirmed so far are Twisted Pixel Studios and Sanzaru Games. Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Meta (formerly Facebook) planned to cut 10 percent of its VR/AR department.
The New York Times was among the first to report on these cuts, claiming that Meta Reality Labs would be reducing its headcount by the aforementioned 10 percent. However, it was Twisted Pixel Studios Level Designer Andy Gentile who first shared news of actual layoffs. Gentile initially mentioned that Sanzaru Games was also affected by the cuts.
This was later officially confirmed by Sanzaru Senior Level Designer Ray West in an update on his LinkedIn page. Both Twisted Pixel Studios and Sanzaru Games have been active and prominent developers within Meta Reality Labs, contributing significantly to the Quest VR game library.
Sanzaru Games developed the highly regarded action-RPG Asgard’s Wrath and its sequel, both flagship titles for the Quest platform. Meanwhile, Twisted Pixel recently launched Marvel’s Deadpool VR, a title that Shacknews News Editor Donovan Erskine enjoyed in his review last year.
These developments mark a significant shift for Meta Reality Labs as it restructures its VR/AR division amid industry challenges.
