India’s domestic aviation sector saw a mixed performance in August 2025, with a notable increase in flight delays impacting tens of thousands of passengers.
According to the latest data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic airlines carried 1.29 crore passengers in August — a slight decline from earlier figures but an improvement over July’s 1.26 crore passengers. Despite this growth, flight disruptions were significant. A total of 74,381 passengers were affected by flight delays, while cancellations impacted 36,362 travelers during the month.
**Market Dynamics: IndiGo’s Share Dips; Air India Group Gains**
In terms of market share, IndiGo’s dominance softened slightly in August, dropping from 65.2% in July to 64.2%. Conversely, the Air India Group, which incorporates both Air India and Air India Express, strengthened its position, increasing its share from 26.2% to 27.3%.
Other carriers experienced minor shifts as well. Akasa Air’s market share edged down from 5.5% in July to 5.4% in August, while SpiceJet’s share remained steady at 2%.
**Performance Review: Alliance Air & Others**
Government-owned Alliance Air saw a decrease in market share, slipping from 0.4% in July to 0.3% in August. Meanwhile, Star Air and Fly91 maintained stable market shares at 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively.
Passenger grievances also continue to be a concern. The DGCA reported 1,407 passenger-related complaints during August, averaging approximately 1.09 complaints for every 10,000 passengers.
As domestic air travel rebounds, stakeholders are closely monitoring operational issues and market shifts to enhance passenger experience and airline performance in the coming months.
