Demolition Derby in Reno: Nevada Breezes By in 55-10 Win over San Jose State
It has been 749 days since Nevada last won a conference game. The days of counting down until that losing streak would end are finally over. I’m not sure what was in Nevada’s breakfast today, but it was enough to power the team to an impressive 55-10 victory over San Jose State.
“It’s embarrassing it took me this long to get that done,” head coach Jeff Choate said about securing his first conference win with Nevada. “I don’t feel any different, but I’m happy for these guys and for this staff.”

### Offense
Nevada’s opening drive started at its own 1-yard line and went about how you would expect — a quick three-and-out. However, things quickly changed on the second drive. After a San Jose State fumble, Nevada took over in Spartans territory and turned it into the first offensive touchdown scored in the first quarter this season. Quarterback Carter Jones connected with Chubba Purdy for a 7-yard touchdown pass, and then threw a touchdown to go up 14-0 with just over six minutes remaining.
The Pack’s first offensive drive of the second quarter was a methodical 13-play, 78-yard march that concluded with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Ramseur, extending the lead to 21-0. Following the second interception of the game, Nevada only needed one play to push the lead to 28-0 as Purdy showcased his versatility with a 13-yard rushing touchdown, evoking memories of Taysom Hill’s playmaking style.
Nevada ended the first half with 187 total yards and three offensive touchdowns. Jones was highly efficient, completing 9 of 10 passes for two touchdowns in the first half, and finished the game completing 16 of 19 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
“He [Jones] had a tough go last week in Logan, so for him to go out today the way he did and see the field the way he did, I feel very good for Carter,” said Coach Choate.
After a turnover on downs by San Jose State, Nevada had roughly 18 seconds left in the first half. Jones connected on an 18-yard pass to Dakota Thomas to set up kicker Joe McFadden, who nailed a 50-yard field goal to close out the half and push the lead to 31-0.
The rushing attack — which had been inconsistent all season — came alive against San Jose State. Caleb Ramseur led the charge with 128 yards on 20 carries and two total touchdowns. Nevada finished the game with 218 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Even special teams got involved. Running back Ky Woods electrified the crowd with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown in the final minute of the game, pushing Nevada’s score into the 50s.

### Defense
Nevada’s defense started strong, forcing an opening three-and-out. On San Jose State’s second drive, the Spartans faced a fourth down past midfield. QB Walker Eget tried to convert up the middle but was picked off by Nakian Jackson, who sprinted 66 yards for a pick-six — marking Nevada’s first touchdown scored in the first quarter all season.
“It’s unexplainable to be honest,” Jackson said about his first career pick-six. “That was sweet to have, I couldn’t even hear anything, all I could hear was the fans cheering.”
The defense maintained its dominance early on. On the very next San Jose State drive, a run play caused the ball to pop loose, and Nevada recovered it deep in Spartans territory. By the end of the first quarter — in four drives — San Jose State was shut out.
Eget struggled all game against the Nevada defense. Early in the second quarter, he threw another interception, this time to Murvin Kenion III, setting Nevada up at the 13-yard line. San Jose State’s longest drive of the half came during the final minute, but they failed to convert on a fourth down near midfield, turning the ball over on downs.
By halftime, San Jose State had already committed three turnovers, which translated into 21 points for Nevada.
The Spartans finally got on the board in the third quarter with a 56-yard field goal, making it 31-3. However, Kenion III continued to make life difficult for Eget, intercepting him a second time for Eget’s third interception of the game late in the third quarter.
San Jose State pulled Eget and handed snaps to freshman transfer Robert McDaniel for his collegiate debut. McDaniel promptly threw an interception to Bryson Snelling, tallying the fourth pick of the day for Nevada. The Spartans’ five total turnovers marked their highest since 2019.
San Jose State recorded their first touchdown of the game near the 1:23 mark of the fourth quarter, as quarterback Tama Amisone — the third QB to take snaps for the Spartans — ran in a 12-yard score.
