
Antarctic fisheries regulator creates transshipment vessel list, punts on protected area
**While short on action, this year’s meeting of the regulator of the Antarctic krill fishery set the stage for broader conservation measures to be passed at its 2026 convening**

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which regulates the krill fishery in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, punted on many of the proposals it debated during its annual meeting, which ended Oct. 31.
Although this year’s meeting was light on concrete decisions, it laid important groundwork for broader conservation measures expected to be passed at CCAMLR’s 2026 convening. Stakeholders and environmental advocates will be watching closely as the commission moves toward key protections for the Antarctic marine ecosystem.
