Disney and OpenAI announce licensing deal for Sora AI video generator
Disney has inked a groundbreaking three-year licensing deal with OpenAI that will bring beloved characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars to the AI video platform.
As part of this partnership, Disney will invest a staggering one billion dollars into OpenAI, further strengthening their collaboration. The deal allows more than 200 Disney characters to be featured in videos generated by OpenAI’s AI service. A curated selection of these AI-generated videos will then be showcased to users directly within the Disney+ app, enhancing the streaming experience with innovative content.
In addition to the licensing agreement, Disney confirmed it will become a major customer of OpenAI’s technologies. The company plans to integrate OpenAI’s APIs to build new products, tools, and experiences—particularly for Disney+. Moreover, ChatGPT will be deployed to assist Disney employees, streamlining workflows and boosting productivity across the organization.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content.”
Altman also emphasized the importance of responsible collaboration between AI companies and creative leaders. “This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”
This strategic alliance promises to revolutionize the way audiences engage with Disney’s vast array of characters and stories, blending cutting-edge AI technology with world-class storytelling.
