Yuya Wakamatsu expects to go the distance with tough Joshua Pacio at ONE 173: “That’s what I hope for”
Yuya Wakamatsu is set to defend his ONE flyweight MMA world title for the first time at ONE 173. While he hopes to secure another highlight-reel finish, Wakamatsu would also be thrilled to deliver a five-round classic against challenger Joshua Pacio.
The highly anticipated clash between these two ONE world champions is one of seven world title matchups scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 16, at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena. For Wakamatsu, this fight represents a perfect opportunity to remind the world why he is currently the best flyweight in the division.
Across the ring, reigning ONE strawweight MMA world champion Joshua Pacio aims to make history. A victory would crown him as his nation’s first-ever two-division MMA champion, an achievement that would cement his legacy in the sport.
In a recent vlog on his official YouTube channel (@YuyaWakamatsu0209), the 30-year-old shared his predictions for the fight. While he intends to hunt for a finish, “Little Piranha” admits it would also be exciting and satisfying to go the full 25 minutes in a fierce battle with Pacio.
“In my opinion, I’d like to have a real, fierce, and action-packed fight that will last into the fifth round. Yes, that’s what I hope for,” said Yuya Wakamatsu.

“I really feel extra powerful in this weight class. I feel it in training too, particularly with my recovery,” the Lions Nation MMA warrior shared. Surprisingly, he revealed that fatigue hasn’t settled in yet.
“During my training camps at strawweight, usually fatigue sets in near the end of the week. But right now, I have the same energy levels I had from the start.”
