Tommy DeCarlo, who became longtime singer of Boston after recording a Brad Delp tribute, dies at 60
Tommy DeCarlo, who became the lead singer of classic rock band Boston for nearly 20 years after a Myspace tribute to the band’s original singer, has passed away.
DeCarlo’s children, Annie, Talia, and Tommy Jr., shared the news on his Facebook and Instagram pages, revealing that their father had been battling brain cancer for several months before his death on Monday. They said, “He fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.” DeCarlo was 60 years old.
Boston’s original singer, Brad Delp, who helped the band achieve hits such as “More Than a Feeling” and “Peace of Mind,” died in 2007. At that time, DeCarlo was a 43-year-old Home Depot employee in North Carolina. He wrote, sang, and recorded a tribute song to Delp, which he posted online along with several Boston covers on his Myspace page. He then sent the link to the band.
Initially, DeCarlo received a polite rejection, according to Rolling Stone. However, founding guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz was struck by the resemblance of DeCarlo’s voice to Delp’s. Scholz invited him to perform at a tribute concert for the late singer and later asked him to join the band.
DeCarlo reflected on the experience, saying in a bio on the band’s website, “It wasn’t like I was trying to sing like Brad, it was just that I loved to sing along with him.”
Over the next two decades, DeCarlo toured with Boston and contributed vocals to their 2013 album, “Life, Love and Hope.” His unexpected journey from a fan to lead singer remains a remarkable chapter in the band’s history.
