Tamil Nadu: NHRC Takes Cognisance Of Deaths Of Two Sanitation Workers In Tiruchirappalli Over Asphyxiation
**NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Deaths of Two Sanitation Workers in Tiruchirappalli**
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a recent media report stating that two sanitation workers died due to asphyxiation on September 22, 2025. The tragic incident occurred while the workers were engaged in tasks related to a newly constructed underground drainage pipeline near Carmel Garden in the Muthunagar area of Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.
The deceased workers were reportedly employed by a construction firm responsible for undertaking the project on behalf of the Tiruchirappalli Municipal Corporation.
**Concerns Over Human Rights Violations**
The NHRC has expressed serious concern over this incident, noting that if the media reports are accurate, it raises significant human rights issues. In response, the Commission has issued notices to both the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation and the Superintendent of Police in Tiruchirappalli. These authorities have been asked to submit a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.
**Investigation and Compensation**
The NHRC’s requested report is expected to cover the progress and status of the investigation into the deaths. Additionally, information regarding any compensation provided to the next of kin of the deceased workers should be included.
**Safety Measures Under Scrutiny**
According to the media report published on September 23, 2025, there remains uncertainty about whether the workers were supplied with proper safety gear while performing this hazardous task. The adequacy of safety measures at the site is now a crucial aspect under scrutiny in the ongoing inquiry.
The NHRC’s intervention highlights the importance of ensuring safe working conditions for sanitation workers and holding responsible parties accountable to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
