Former India player Aakash Chopra has suggested that Rohit Sharma should reconsider his batting approach in ODIs following discussions with the Indian cricket think tank, which now includes Shreyas Iyer as the vice-captain.
Rohit Sharma was recently removed as India’s ODI captain ahead of the ongoing three-match series against Australia. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have been appointed as the new captain and vice-captain respectively.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ the former India opener was asked whether Rohit should continue with his risky batting style or focus on accumulating runs steadily for himself and the team.
“Very good question. I genuinely feel, and even when he was hitting sixes and fours, I thought he was selling himself short. He was going too hard too soon. When you try to hit so much, hundreds aren’t scored and the average falls,” Chopra responded.
He further explained, “You were the captain at that time and setting a template for the team, saying you would play like that only. However, does the Indian team have to play that way now? This is a question Rohit should discuss with Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir, and Shreyas Iyer – what is our plan now?”
Chopra also noted that Rohit adopted an ultra-aggressive approach during the 2023 World Cup, which was played in batting-friendly conditions in India. He questioned whether a similar strategy will work in potentially seamer-friendly conditions expected in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
“There is a lot of quality but quantity is also required,” Chopra emphasized, referring to Rohit’s recent performances.
He added that Rohit Sharma needs to return to his big-scoring ways. “The father of big hundreds, as we used to call him, has to go back to that style. He will have to do the same job again – score those big hundreds.”
The cricketer-turned-commentator believes the Indian team would benefit more if Rohit played substantial innings rather than just providing fast starts.
“When he helps himself, the Indian team gains a lot. If you want a Rohit who scores only 40-50 runs, you can find someone else. You need a Rohit who scores 150,” Chopra said.
He expressed hope that, now fit again, Rohit will focus on building big innings and not get out trying to hit big shots too early. “I have great expectations that if he gets set now, he won’t get out while trying to hit a six after scoring 40-odd runs,” he added.
To conclude, Aakash Chopra highlighted that a batter’s job is to maximize their potential. He recommended that Rohit Sharma should aim to bat through till the 40th or 45th over and target scores above 150 runs, even a double century if possible.
