Remember Project Ara? Google’s modular phone makes its way to TikTok

A TikTok user has recently acquired three prototypes of Google’s cancelled modular Project Ara phone and shared multiple clips and images showcasing the device and its unique modules.

Google has developed countless projects over the years. While some have successfully reached the market, others haven’t been as fortunate. Project Ara is one such example — an innovative Android-powered modular phone designed with interchangeable parts. It had the potential to be the first truly modular phone on the market but was cancelled before its official launch.

Despite the project being abandoned, some prototypes still exist. In a nostalgic blast from the past, a TikTok user has posted new videos and images of these rare Ara prototypes, offering a fresh look at the forgotten handset.

In a series of clips and photos, the user provides views of the device from all angles, shares the spec sheet, and highlights the various modules. One video even shows the phone turning on, giving us a glimpse of the homescreen and app drawer. Another demonstrates how the modules can be removed — either physically using a SIM card ejector tool or via software by accessing a dedicated eject page.

Project Ara was first publicly introduced in 2013, over a year after Google began development. The company showcased the first prototype at Google I/O in 2014. However, in 2016, the project was cancelled as part of Google’s effort to streamline its hardware initiatives.
