Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar made headlines during the 2025 County Championship by achieving his maiden 10-wicket haul in First-Class cricket. The historic performance came during Surrey’s match against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, marking Chahar’s debut in the County Championship.
Chahar, 26, who represents Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy and has featured seven times in white-ball cricket for India, was included in Surrey’s squad for the final phase of the season. He certainly made an impactful start to his County Championship career.
### Match Highlights: A Stellar Performance in a Thrilling Win
Surrey had a rocky start to the match, getting bowled out for just 147 runs in their first innings. Hampshire took advantage and posted a solid total of 248. However, it was Chahar who emerged as the star performer with the ball.
In the first innings, Chahar took 2 wickets for 67 runs, helping to keep Hampshire’s advantage in check. His true brilliance shone through in the second innings where he played a key role in restricting Hampshire to just 160 runs.
### Chahar’s Second-Innings Brilliance and Match Turnaround
Chahar was instrumental in Surrey’s thrilling turnaround. Early in the second innings, he dismissed important batsmen including Ali Orr (48), Liam Dawson, and Washington Sundar in a tight spell of four overs, helping reduce Hampshire to 141/9.
Despite some resistance from James Fuller and Brad Wheal on Day 3, Chahar returned to claim Fuller’s wicket, sealing a dramatic 20-run victory for Surrey. He finished with astonishing figures of 8/51 from 24 overs in the second innings, complementing his 2/67 in the first innings.
### Record Achievement and Career Milestones
Rahul Chahar’s outstanding effort helped him record his first-ever 10-wicket haul (10/118) in First-Class cricket. According to Wisden, his 8/51 in the second innings ranks as the third-best innings bowling figures for Surrey since 2000, trailing only Martin Bicknell’s 9-47 and Kemar Roach’s 8-40.
The wrist-spinner has now amassed 97 wickets from 25 red-ball matches at an average of 26.34, which includes eight five-wicket hauls and six four-wicket hauls — a testament to his growing prowess in the longer format.
Rahul Chahar’s remarkable debut performance has certainly set the stage for an exciting County Championship journey ahead. Surrey will be hoping the leg-spinner continues to inspire match-winning performances in the games to come.
