Puerto Rican community in Chicago area excited for Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance
CHICAGO (WLS) — There is a surge of excitement building ahead of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance. From local businesses to museums, Puerto Rican communities and many others across the Chicago area are finding creative ways to celebrate this historic moment.
Galería Chicago, a nightclub in the Gold Coast neighborhood, has joined the celebration by constructing a replica of Bad Bunny’s “Casita,” which translates to “little house.” This unique installation has been part of his latest tour set. The idea to build the replica originated from Acro Presents, a promoting group that the club collaborates with.
“When he started making music, he was a bag boy, and now you know he won a Grammy for the number one album,” said Orlando Zapata, manager of Galería Chicago. “He’s doing a lot of iconic things.”
The replica has been a huge hit. Zapata shared, “Last weekend was our second weekend. We did probably 1,500 people through the doors. We had a line down the block and wrapped around.”
Nearby, Brew Brew Coffee and Tea, located near Logan Square, is adding to the festivities with a special drink called the “Benito Latte.” Inspired by traditional Puerto Rican flavors, the latte blends the classic coquito taste with three shots of espresso.
“It’s a coquito latte,” said Evan Alicea-Guivas, a barista at Brew Brew Coffee & Tea. “I can’t give out the recipe—everyone does it differently—but it’s that with three shots of espresso on top.”
The enthusiasm for Bad Bunny runs deeper than just food and events. His music addresses complex and critical issues, including the struggles and inequalities faced by Puerto Rico. Billy Ocasio, CEO of Chicago’s National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Humboldt Park, emphasized the powerful messages in Bad Bunny’s work.
“It’s a message to celebrate, but it’s also a message that makes you reflect, makes you think, makes you angry, makes you cry,” Ocasio said. “It’s a message that resonates with everything that’s going on in the world today.”
Bad Bunny’s songs break language barriers, touching on universal themes like love, loss, and grief. For many Latinx people in particular, his presence on such a global stage brings a profound sense of visibility and representation.
“I think right now especially for a lot of Latin people, they want to be seen and want to be heard,” said Alicea-Guivas. “And for him to be on one of the world’s biggest stages—you can’t get more seen and heard than that.”
As the Super Bowl approaches, Chicago’s Puerto Rican community and fans everywhere are coming together to honor Bad Bunny’s cultural impact and historic performance.
