What’s the story?
Nepal has created history by registering their first-ever T20I series win against a Full Member nation, West Indies. In the second T20I of the three-match series held in Sharjah, Nepal thrashed the Windies to take a 2-0 lead. Posting a competitive total of 173/6, Nepal then bowled out West Indies for just 83 runs. This 90-run margin of victory is now the biggest ever for an Associate nation against a Full Member side in T20I cricket.
#1 Nepal: 90 Runs vs West Indies, Sharjah, 2025
Nepal’s emphatic 90-run win marks a record-breaking achievement as they secured their maiden T20I series victory over a Full Member team. West Indies’ total of 83 is also the lowest ever scored by a Full Member nation against an Associate side in T20 Internationals, according to Cricbuzz.
Key contributors for Nepal included Aasif Sheikh (68 runs), Sundeep Jora (63 runs), and bowler Mohammad Aadil Alam, who took 4 wickets for 24 runs.
#2 Afghanistan: 81 Runs vs Zimbabwe, Abu Dhabi, 2016
Before Nepal’s landmark win, the record was held by Afghanistan, who were still an Associate nation in 2016. Under the leadership of Asghar Afghan, Afghanistan defeated Zimbabwe by 81 runs in the 2nd T20I at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
Afghanistan posted a formidable 215/6, powered by Mohammad Shahzad’s explosive 118 off 67 balls, featuring 10 fours and 8 sixes. Zimbabwe was then bowled out for 134.
#3 Afghanistan: 59 Runs vs Zimbabwe, Nagpur, 2016
Later that year, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe met again in the ICC T20 World Cup. Afghanistan defended a total of 186/6 to win by 59 runs. Contributions from Shahzad, Samiullah Shinwari, and Mohammad Nabi, all scoring 40-plus runs, helped set a strong target.
Spin bowler Rashid Khan led the bowling attack, dismantling Zimbabwe’s batting lineup for 127 and taking three crucial wickets.
These victories highlight the growing competitiveness of Associate nations in international T20 cricket and underscore their ability to challenge Full Member teams.
