**Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki Holds Telephonic Talk with PM Narendra Modi Amidst Gen-Z Protests**
Nepal has witnessed intense protests over the past few days, led mainly by the Gen-Z movement, resulting in a tense situation across the country. However, recent reports suggest that the situation is now gradually coming under control.
In a significant development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation on Thursday with Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. An official statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that PM Modi extended his condolences for the tragic loss of lives during the recent protests in Nepal.
During the conversation, PM Modi assured India’s full support to Nepal in its efforts to restore peace, stability, and promote the progress of the Nepali people. He emphasized India’s readiness to work closely with Nepal to further strengthen the special ties shared between the two neighbouring countries.
The MEA statement, as reported by news agency ANI, further added, “The Prime Minister congratulated Prime Minister Karki on her appointment and conveyed best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of India.” It reiterated India’s commitment to support Nepal in these critical times.
Responding to the gesture, Nepal’s interim PM Sushila Karki thanked PM Modi for India’s steadfast support and reciprocated the desire to deepen the bilateral ties between the two nations.
Additionally, PM Modi extended felicitations on the occasion of the upcoming National Day of Nepal, and both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication going forward.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry of Nepal released a statement conveying warm wishes to PM Modi on his 75th birthday. It quoted Prime Minister Karki saying, “The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Karki conveyed her heartfelt greetings and best wishes to Prime Minister Modi on his 75th birthday and appreciated the Indian Prime Minister for his message of solidarity.”
Importantly, PM Karki highlighted that, in response to the recent Gen-Z movement, holding elections remains the top priority of the present government. She expressed a strong commitment to establishing accountable, responsive, and corruption-free governance that truly reflects the aspirations of Nepali youth.
PM Modi assured full support and cooperation in alignment with the priorities set by the Government of Nepal, as cited by ANI.
Sushila Karki holds the distinction of being Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice and is currently serving as the country’s first woman Prime Minister. She is widely supported by the Gen-Z led revolution, which has played a pivotal role in transforming Nepal’s political landscape. The Gen-Z movement led to extensive protests against the former regime of KP Sharma Oli, resulting in 74 fatalities following police firing. Oli is currently in hiding.
Interim Prime Minister Karki is expected to remain in office until the first week of March 2026, when elections are scheduled to take place to elect a new executive head, marking the conclusion of her interim tenure.
