Pesky Toronto Blue Jays oust Yankees to advance to first ALCS since 2016
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer each drove in a run as eight Toronto pitchers combined to shut down the New York Yankees in a 5-2 victory Wednesday night. This win sent the Blue Jays to the American League Championship Series (ALCS) for the first time in nine years.
Nathan Lukes provided a two-run single, while Addison Barger contributed three of Toronto’s 12 hits. The pesky Blue Jays, known for fouling off tough pitches and consistently putting the ball in play, bounced back after blowing a five-run lead in Tuesday night’s loss at Yankee Stadium.
As the AL East champion, Toronto took the best-of-five Division Series 3-1 and will host Game 1 of the best-of-seven ALCS on Sunday. Their opponent will be either the Detroit Tigers or the Seattle Mariners, who are set to decide their playoff series in Game 5 on Friday in Seattle.
Ryan McMahon homered for the wild-card Yankees, but it was not enough to stave off elimination. This marks the fourth time this postseason that New York has failed to advance, preventing them from repeating as AL champions.
Despite a terrific playoff performance from Aaron Judge following his previous October struggles, the 33-year-old star slugger remains without a World Series ring. The Yankees are still chasing their 28th title and their first since 2009.
