OpenAI signs $38 billion AWS compute deal
OpenAI and Amazon have signed a landmark $38 billion deal that grants OpenAI access to Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) extensive network of servers to support advanced generative AI workloads. This agreement, which goes into effect immediately, allows OpenAI to leverage AWS services and capabilities from day one.
The details of the partnership were revealed by OpenAI in a press release published on its website earlier this week. As part of the deal, Amazon will provide OpenAI with access to AWS EC2 UltraServers, which utilize the latest NVIDIA GPU technology. This will enable OpenAI to scale its generative AI workloads across tens of millions of CPUs, significantly expanding its compute capacity.
AWS’s cloud computing infrastructure is widely regarded as one of the most powerful in the technology industry today. While competitors like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud also offer robust cloud services, AWS remains a dominant player and is deeply ingrained across various markets. Its reliability is so critical that any AWS server malfunctions tend to cause major disruptions.
Despite the challenges, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed great enthusiasm about the partnership, eager to explore the transformative potential AWS can unlock for OpenAI’s research and development efforts. This collaboration is expected to accelerate advancements in AI by leveraging AWS’s unparalleled computing resources.
