The announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize winners is set to begin next week, starting October 6. These prestigious awards recognize outstanding contributions in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics, and peace.
Winners will join the illustrious ranks of past laureates such as Albert Einstein and Mother Teresa. Each recipient will receive a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million), an 18-carat gold medal, and a diploma.
### Origins of the Nobel Prizes
The Nobel Prizes were established by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish businessman and chemist best known for inventing dynamite. Nobel chose to use his fortune to endow annual awards honoring individuals whose work “during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
The first prizes were awarded in 1901 in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace. A sixth prize, in economic sciences, was added later in 1968 by Sweden’s central bank.
### The Nomination and Selection Process
Nominations for the Nobel Prizes are kept strictly confidential. Candidates cannot nominate themselves, but can be nominated multiple times by qualified individuals, including members of each prize’s selection committee.
While each prize committee operates under its own procedures, they all share the common goal of fulfilling Alfred Nobel’s vision by honoring those whose achievements significantly benefit humanity.
