Nissan Teases New SUV, But It Might Not Be New At All
Nissan’s Expanding SUV Lineup to Include New Model “Kait” Built in Brazil
Nissan is set to introduce a new addition to its growing SUV range. During the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, the carmaker confirmed it will produce a new model called the Kait at its factory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Primarily targeted at the Latin American market, the Kait will also be sold in several other global regions.
A single teaser image of the Kait has been released, offering a sneak peek of the vehicle’s tailgate and distinctive LED taillights. Nissan highlighted that the Kait is the second model announced as part of a $540 million investment in Brazil. It will join other popular Nissan SUVs in Latin America, such as the Magnite, Kicks, X-Trail, and Pathfinder.
Interestingly, while the rear-end design of the Kait appears unique, reports suggest this model will not be entirely new. Instead, the Kait is believed to be a restyled version of the first-generation Kicks, which has been on the market since 2016. This older Kicks model was recently rebadged as the Kicks Play to make space for the newer, second-generation Kicks in Nissan’s lineup.
In markets like Brazil, Nissan sells both the all-new Kicks and the Kicks Play simultaneously. The Kait seems poised to serve as an updated iteration of the Kicks Play. If this holds true, the Kait will share the same platform as the Kicks Play, likely maintaining similar dimensions, including a 103-inch (2,620 mm) wheelbase.
Regarding performance, the Kait is expected to retain the engine options offered in the Kicks Play. This includes a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine capable of running on gasoline or ethanol, the latter being widely used in Brazil. Power will be delivered to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Nissan has yet to announce the official unveiling date for the Kait. However, it confirmed the model will be exported from Brazil to more than 20 countries, underscoring its significance in the brand’s global SUV portfolio.
