NFL Announces Punishment for 2 Commanders Players After Chiefs Loss
It’s been a rough stretch for the Washington Commanders, and the league announced they will be piling on. The NFL revealed on Saturday that two Commanders were fined due to actions during the Week 8 “Monday Night Football” game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Linebacker Frankie Luvu and safety Quan Martin were penalized for being overly aggressive during the matchup. Luvu was fined $46,372 for a hip-drop tackle on Chiefs tight end Noah Gray in the fourth quarter, a play for which he was not flagged during the game. Meanwhile, Martin was fined $11,572 for striking a defenseless player in the third quarter at 14:09.
### Frankie Luvu Developing an Unfortunate Reputation
This is a tough setback for the Commanders, who currently sit third in the NFC East. Luvu, known for his aggressive style, has now received his second NFL fine of the 2025 season. In Week 4, he was fined $23,186 for a collision with an Atlanta Falcons player, which included another hip-drop tackle on quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the second quarter.
This latest fine adds to a growing history of penalties for Luvu. He was previously fined $16,883 in the NFC Divisional Round last January for a similar hip-drop tackle on running back Jahmyr Gibbs. With the most recent fine, Luvu has accumulated three fines related to this type of dangerous play.
The NFL continues to focus heavily on safety concerns surrounding hip-drop tackles, so this latest penalty is hardly surprising. For a Commanders team already struggling, these fines only deepen their challenges.
### Commanders Need to Pull Off Some Upsets Moving Forward
Entering Week 9 with a 3-5 record, the Commanders face an uphill battle to reach the playoffs. What began as a promising season has been derailed by injuries, age, and inconsistency, leaving Washington struggling through the middle of the year.
Unfortunately, the upcoming schedule offers little relief. Head coach Dan Quinn is under pressure to make key adjustments, particularly in the schemes run by offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.
In Week 9, Washington will face the Seattle Seahawks, who currently hold a strong 5-2 record in the NFC West. Seattle boasts one of the NFL’s top five scoring offenses and a stifling defense under head coach Mike Macdonald, allowing just 75 yards per game — the best mark in the league.
The Seahawks have clearly found their balance, posing a serious challenge for the Commanders. To compete, Washington will need their running game to significantly support quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is returning from injury.
With wide receiver Terry McLaurin out and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil unavailable, Daniels will face one of the toughest defenses of the season. This game represents a critical test for the Commanders as they strive to get their season back on track.
