Navratri 2025: Thane Police Ban Plasma, Beam, & Laser Lights To Prevent Eye Injuries In Maharashtra
**Thane Police Commissionerate Bans Plasma, Beam, and Laser Lights During Navratri Celebrations**
The Thane Police Commissionerate has issued a ban on the use of plasma lights, beam lights, and laser beam lights during Navratri celebrations and processions, citing concerns related to public health and safety. The prohibitory order was announced on September 17 by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) under Section 163 of the Indian Security Act, as reported by *The Times of India*.
This directive follows incidents where the use of high-intensity lighting at cultural programmes and garba events posed potential health risks to participants and spectators.
According to police reports, many Navratri mandals widely employ high-powered lighting during nighttime cultural performances, garba dances, and immersion processions. These bright lights have reportedly caused eye injuries among participants and onlookers, including children, senior citizens, and members of the general public, raising concerns about their well-being.
Authorities have also warned that such lighting can distract motorists, increasing the likelihood of road accidents and potentially leading to law and order challenges. To enforce the ban, offenders will be penalised under Section 223 of the Indian Justice Code 2023. Citizens are encouraged to report any violations by contacting the police control room.
**Safety Measures and Event Details**
In preparation for the festivities, Thane Police have made extensive arrangements to ensure a safe and peaceful Navratri season. This year’s celebrations will see the installation of 608 public and 3,254 private Durga idols, along with 133 public and 287 private deity images across the city.
A total of 590 public venues and 500 private locations under the commissionerate’s jurisdiction will host garba events and cultural programmes, including Ravan Dahan celebrations.
Recognising the prominence of women and girls participating in dandiya and garba events, the police have deployed a significant number of plainclothes officers, both male and female. This measure aims to prevent incidents of harassment, molestation, theft, and vehicle-related crimes during the festivities.
