Mumbai: Shikhar Dhawan Leaves ED Office After Being Grilled For 8 Hours In Betting Apps Promotion Case – VIDEO
Former Indian opening batter Shikhar Dhawan was seen leaving the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Mumbai after being questioned by officers on Thursday, September 4. News agency PTI released a video of the incident on social media, showing Dhawan sitting in his black car and posing for a photo.
The questioning of Dhawan by the ED relates to the betting app named 1xBet, which Dhawan has allegedly been promoting. According to media reports, the retired cricketer’s statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of the authorities’ ongoing investigation.
Notably, the Indian government recently introduced legislation banning real-money online gaming. This new law led to Dream11 relinquishing its position as the lead jersey sponsor of the Indian men’s cricket team. Former Indian batter Suresh Raina was also questioned by the ED in Delhi recently, amid a wider crackdown on several digital platforms.
The authorities have launched investigations into these platforms due to accusations of defrauding lakhs of people and investors of their hard-earned money. Consequently, the role of cricketers and celebrities in promoting such platforms is also under scrutiny.
### Shikhar Dhawan’s International Career
Shikhar Dhawan represented India in 167 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 34 Test matches, and 68 T20 Internationals from 2010 to 2022. The 50-over format was arguably his strongest suit, as he amassed 6,793 ODI runs at an average of 44.11, including 17 centuries.
He formed a formidable opening partnership with Rohit Sharma and was part of India’s victorious squad at the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. However, Dhawan experienced a sharp dip in form in late 2022 and struggled to regain his place in the national side, particularly after the rapid emergence of Shubman Gill.
Shikhar Dhawan retired from all forms of cricket last year, concluding a prolific international career.
