Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project: Major Milestone Achieved With Completion Of 5-Km Tunnel Between Ghansoli & Shilphata
A major milestone has been achieved in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project with the completion of an approximately 5 km (4.881 km) tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata. Constructed using the advanced New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), this segment forms a crucial part of the ambitious 21 km tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata, which also includes a 7 km stretch beneath the Thane Creek.
The NATM tunnelling for this stretch commenced through three faces in May 2024. The first breakthrough for the initial 2.7 km continuous tunnel section was achieved on 9th July 2025, between the Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) and Savali shaft. With this breakthrough, a continuous stretch of 4.881 km tunnel length has been completed between Savali shaft and the Tunnel Portal at Shilphata. This tunnel will connect to the viaduct portion of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project at Shilphata.
This NATM tunnel features an internal excavation width of 12.6 meters. The breakthrough marks the completion of excavation works under complex geological conditions and validates the successful application of engineering techniques such as drilling and blasting, survey works, and support systems. This important phase paves the way for the project to advance into final stages like waterproofing, lining, finishing, and equipment installation.
To accelerate the tunnelling process, an Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) was constructed, enabling simultaneous excavation from both the Ghansoli and Shilphata sides. The remaining 16 km of tunnelling will be executed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnel will be a single tube with a diameter of 13.1 meters, designed to accommodate twin tracks for both up and down lines.
Comprehensive safety measures have been implemented at the site to ensure safe and controlled tunnelling activities without disturbing nearby structures. These measures include ground settlement markers, piezometers, inclinometers, and strain gauges. Strict access controls have been established to restrict unauthorized entry and safeguard workers within the sensitive and complex construction environment. Additionally, provisions have been made for pumping fresh air inside the tunnel to maintain a safe working atmosphere for construction personnel.
**Overall Project Progress**
India’s first 508 km long Bullet Train corridor, running between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, is making significant progress:
– Out of the total 508 km, 321 km of viaduct and 398 km of pier work have been completed
– 17 river bridges and 9 steel bridges have been finished
– More than 400,000 noise barriers have been installed along a 206 km stretch
– Track bed construction covering 206 track km has been completed
– Over 2,000 Overhead Equipment (OHE) masts have been installed, covering approximately 48 km of the mainline viaduct
– Excavation work on 7 mountain tunnels in Palghar district is currently underway
– Superstructure work on all stations in Gujarat is at an advanced stage
– Construction has started on all three elevated stations in Maharashtra, and base slab casting at the Mumbai underground station is in progress
This project continues to move forward steadily, bringing India closer to realizing a modern, high-speed rail network.
