More than a dozen Hells Angels sentenced in OB beating, stabbing
Several individuals connected to the San Diego County chapter of the Hells Angels have been sentenced for their roles in a hate-related stabbing that occurred in 2023. Thirteen defendants pleaded guilty to various charges and have received sentences ranging from state prison and county jail to probation terms. These recent sentences come in addition to the June sentencing of the lead defendant, Troy Andrew Scholder.
The attack targeted three young Black men in Ocean Beach, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. Two of the victims were left badly injured in the violent incident.
The prosecution focused on the June 6, 2023 attack, during which the three men—aged 19, 20, and 21—were chased along Newport Avenue after one of them reportedly spoke to a Hells Angels member’s girlfriend. One of the victims managed to escape, but the other two were brutally beaten by several defendants. During the assault, the attackers hurled racial slurs and told the victims they did not belong in that neighborhood.
While one victim was on the ground, Troy Andrew Scholder, described by prosecutors as a longtime leader of the motorcycle gang, drew a knife and stabbed him in the chest. Deputy District Attorney Miriam Hemming detailed during Scholder’s trial that the knife fractured the victim’s sternum, pierced his lung, and severed an artery, nearly causing him to bleed out.
Following the stabbing, other co-defendants helped Scholder escape the crime scene, transporting him to the gang’s clubhouse in El Cajon, prosecutors said. Scholder and his co-defendants were arrested nearly three months later.
Scholder was convicted by a San Diego jury of attempted murder and additional charges. In June, he was sentenced to 21 years to life in state prison.
