MLB approves ‘robot umpires’ for 2026 season
‘Robot umpires’ will make their debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the 2026 season, as the game adopts an automated strike zone challenge system that was tested in the 2025 pre-season, MLB announced on Tuesday.
The league’s joint competition committee voted to approve the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System. This innovative system allows players to challenge human umpires’ ball and strike calls, aiming to improve the accuracy and fairness of the game.
The introduction of the ABS system marks a significant step toward integrating advanced technology in baseball, enhancing both the player and fan experience.
