Mike Norvell’s seat is on fire after Florida State football’s loss to Clemson
After Florida State football’s brutal loss to the Clemson Tigers last Saturday, there is no doubt that conversations surrounding the job security of head coach Mike Norvell have intensified.
As demands for Norvell’s dismissal grow following each disappointing loss, the latest reports suggest that preparations for such an event may already be underway. On3 Sports reporter and college football insider Pete Nakos recently shared his latest insights on the coaching situation, dedicating a section specifically to Norvell’s future.
Nakos revealed that talks about Norvell’s “future have ramped up again,” although these discussions “never stopped,” even amidst Norvell’s recent home win during a bye week. “Three weeks ago, top Florida State decision makers held conversations about the future of the program under Mike Norvell following an embarrassing loss at Stanford,” Nakos wrote.
In response to these concerns, athletic director Michael Alford released a statement on October 20, announcing that a “comprehensive assessment of the football program” would be conducted following the 2025 season.
Despite this, Nakos noted, “From speaking with sources on Sunday morning, conversations around Norvell’s future have ramped up again. In reality, the conversations never stopped, sources said.”
### Current Status of Mike Norvell and Florida State Football
While the Seminoles blew out Wake Forest in the week prior, the program couldn’t build on that momentum against Clemson. With the pressure mounting once again on Norvell, the team’s record stands at 4-5 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Under Norvell’s leadership, Florida State holds a 37-32 overall record and a 21-25 record in conference play. Nakos reports there is “some concern” among decision-makers about prolonging any coaching decisions, especially given that college football currently has several top job openings.
The loss to Stanford in October triggered conversations about “putting money together to buy out Norvell’s contract,” which would reportedly require nearly $59 million by the end of the season.
“Real concern remains about how a 2026 roster could be funded if Mike Norvell returns,” Nakos explained. “The Seminoles spent over $20 million on this year’s team, and they’re currently 4-5. Trying to put together the necessary dollars to fund a roster capable of competing for an ACC title if Norvell returns will be a significant challenge, sources have said—especially when Florida State donors could be expected to help pay Norvell’s buyout.”
### Looking Ahead
At this point, it remains unclear whether Florida State will move forward with firing Mike Norvell. The Seminoles’ next game is scheduled for Saturday night against Virginia Tech, and much will likely depend on the team’s performance moving forward.
With a 4-5 overall record and 1-5 in ACC play, the pressure is certainly on Norvell to turn things around—but the future of his tenure remains uncertain.
