Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving makes surprising admission on future retirement
**Kyrie Irving Addresses Retirement Speculation During Dallas Mavericks Media Day**
During the Dallas Mavericks’ Media Day on Monday, star guard Kyrie Irving was asked about the possibility of retirement in the future. Irving responded honestly, revealing that thoughts about retirement cross his mind more often than many might expect. Despite this, he emphasized that he is still a few years away from seriously considering stepping away from the game.
Currently, Irving is recovering from ACL surgery and does not have an official return date. However, numerous reports have suggested that he might return to the court in early 2026. In recent weeks, videos have surfaced showing Irving taking basketball shots, leading some to speculate that he could be ahead of schedule in his recovery.
Both Irving and Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd have addressed these rumors. They confirmed that Irving is progressing on schedule, not ahead of it. In fact, Kidd publicly criticized inaccurate reporting that claimed Irving was surpassing recovery expectations.
Since his ACL injury, questions about Irving’s potential retirement have been raised periodically. At 33 years old, Irving has already achieved significant success in the NBA. Some have wondered if injury concerns might prompt him to retire sooner rather than later. Nevertheless, Irving’s passion for basketball remains strong. He is committed to the rehabilitation and recovery process with the goal of returning to NBA action.
The Mavericks boast a talented roster, and Irving’s eventual return is expected to bolster Dallas’s chances for a postseason run. Regardless of how far the team advances, Irving has multiple years left in his NBA career. As he mentioned, while the thought of retirement has crossed his mind more often than people realize, he is still a few years away from seriously entertaining the idea.
