Maharashtra rains: Five dead in Latur floods amid extreme rainfall
**Heavy Rains Lash Maharashtra: Latur District Faces Devastating Impact**
With incessant rains battering parts of Maharashtra over the past few days, Latur has emerged as one of the worst-affected districts. The region experienced devastating rainfall, leading to tragic incidents and significant damage.
**Tragic Loss of Lives Amid Floods**
In the early hours of Saturday, the bodies of five individuals who were swept away by the heavy rains in Latur were recovered after nearly 40 hours of intensive search operations, officials confirmed. According to news agency PTI, the search involved teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade, and police.
The tragic events unfolded early Tuesday when 27-year-old Sudershan Kerba Ghonshetty drowned in the Tirru River while returning from the fields. Later that day, a severe incident occurred in Jalkot taluka where five people traveling in an autorickshaw were swept away by strong currents as water surged over a bridge. While three passengers were rescued, two remained missing initially.
Further details revealed that the autorickshaw was en route to Malhipparga when it was caught in the floodwaters around 8 pm. The bodies of Ghoshetty, autorickshaw driver Sangram Sonkamble, and passenger Vitthal Gavle were recovered on Thursday after the prolonged search. Additionally, the bodies of Vaibhav Pundalik Gaikwad (24) from Udgir and Sangeeta Murhari Suryavwanshi (32) were found in Dongargaon Lake, an official confirmed.
**Relentless Rains and Widespread Damage**
Latur continues to reel under relentless downpour for the past two days, causing extensive damage to crops and houses. Preliminary estimates suggest losses in the district amount to around Rs 480 crore. However, officials noted that an exact figure will be determined after a comprehensive damage assessment.
The heavy rains are not confined to Latur alone; on September 16, three people died and over 120 were evacuated in various parts of Maharashtra due to intense rainfall. Last week, five out of eight districts in the Marathwada region received heavy precipitation, with Beed recording the highest at 143.7 mm, followed by Nanded with 131.6 mm and Jalna at 121.4 mm within a 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning.
Rivers swelled, and low-lying areas experienced flooding, severely disrupting daily life. Beed and Ahilyanagar were reported as the worst affected areas, according to the latest updates from the Maharashtra state government on the ongoing rains.
The state continues to monitor the situation closely as relief and rehabilitation efforts intensify amid this challenging weather scenario.
