Maharashtra News: ‘Centre Must Announce ₹10,000 Crore Relief Package For Flood-Hit Marathwada,’ Says Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray
Mumbai, Sep 23: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday demanded that the Centre announce an assistance package of Rs 10,000 crore for Marathwada, where recent rains have wreaked havoc, damaging houses and crops over the last few days.
**Direct Bank Transfers Without Deductions**
Thackeray, in a statement, emphasized that once the government disburses compensation into the bank accounts of affected persons, banks should not deduct loan instalments from these sums.
**Extent of Damage**
According to officials, eight people have died, and hundreds of houses along with crops over more than 33,000 hectares have been damaged as heavy rains pounded the drought-prone Marathwada region over the past four days.
**State Government Response**
The state cabinet reviewed the situation at a meeting in Mumbai, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assuring that the government is actively working to provide relief to farmers and other affected people.
**Thackeray’s Statement**
Thackeray said, “The Centre should immediately announce an assistance package of Rs 10,000 crore for flood-hit Marathwada.” He urged that time should not be wasted on procedures like panchanama (spot assessment of damage) and studying rules related to ex-gratia payments.
The former chief minister further insisted that after compensation is deposited into the bank accounts of affected persons, banks should not deduct loan instalments from the amount, and clear instructions should be issued accordingly.
He also called for the rules regarding “wet drought” to be set aside while providing aid to the region.
**Fadnavis Responds**
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked Thackeray not to politicise the flood situation in Marathwada. “People don’t expect politics during such a crisis. We are doing all that is needed to help people and farmers,” he told reporters when asked about Thackeray’s remarks on alleged “step-motherly treatment” to Marathwada by the government.
“It is laughable that Thackeray should say this. Some parties want to indulge in politics,” Fadnavis charged.
**Regarding Wet Drought**
In response to demands that a wet drought be declared in the state, Fadnavis said, “It is not a question of wet drought. We are doing all that is needed as per the rules to provide relief.”
He added that compensation for house, cattle, and crop damages will be provided separately according to standing orders.
