Joe Biden completes radiation treatment for aggressive prostate cancer: ‘Rung the bell!’
Former President Joe Biden has completed a weeks-long course of radiation therapy for Stage 4 prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. The 82-year-old celebrated this significant milestone on Monday at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia by participating in the traditional ringing of the bell—a ritual that marks the end of treatment for cancer patients.
“Rung the Bell!” Biden’s daughter, Ashley Biden, wrote in an Instagram post alongside a video of her father clanging the silver bell as hospital staff cheered him on. She added, “Thank you to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at Penn Medicine. We are so grateful.”
A spokesperson for Biden confirmed in a statement to CBS News that the former president had completed several weeks of radiation therapy at the Philadelphia hospital. His office initially announced the treatment on October 11. As of now, it remains unclear if Biden, who will turn 83 next month, will undergo any additional procedures or treatments for his cancer diagnosis.
Biden was diagnosed in May with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bone. Doctors characterized the disease as high-grade, with a Gleason score of nine out of 10. However, it is hormone-sensitive, allowing management through medication and radiation therapy.
Concerns about Biden’s health and age increased during the final year of his presidency. The cancer diagnosis renewed worries about whether the commander in chief was dealing with medical issues while in office.
On Saturday, Biden made a public appearance — his first since the announcement of his radiation therapy — attending evening Mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, a Roman Catholic church in Greenville, Delaware, which he has frequented for decades.
Ashley Biden expressed her pride and gratitude in another Instagram post on Monday. “Dad has been so damn brave throughout his treatment,” she wrote, sharing a photo of herself alongside Joe Biden, former First Lady Jill Biden, and two of the ex-president’s grandchildren. “Grateful,” she added.
