Jesus Montero, former top Yankees prospect, dead at 35 after motorcycle accident
Jesús Montero, a former promising Yankees prospect and five-year major leaguer, has died at the age of 35 following a motorcycle accident.
According to a GoFundMe campaign set up to raise money for his hospital bills, Montero was involved in the accident earlier this month in Venezuela. He suffered severe injuries and was placed in an induced coma.
Both the New York Yankees and a team in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League announced his death on Sunday.
Montero was once a rising minor league star in the Yankees organization. He made his major league debut in 2011 as the No. 1 prospect in their system. Known as a big-hitting catcher, he had blasted 21 home runs with an impressive .870 OPS over 123 games in Triple-A the previous year.
Despite the high expectations, Montero only played 18 major league games with the Yankees. The team later traded him to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Michael Pineda, one of the best prospects in baseball at the time.
Montero spent four seasons with the Mariners but did not quite live up to the early promise. Over his MLB career, he appeared in 226 games, posting a .253 batting average and a .693 OPS. His last appearance in the major leagues came in 2015.
