Jacques Villeneuve bluntly questions Lando Norris booing during Mexico GP weekend
1997 F1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has shared his thoughts on the fans booing Lando Norris during last week’s Mexican Grand Prix race weekend. Villeneuve remarked that the boos “didn’t make any sense,” expressing confusion over the negative reaction despite Norris’s impressive performance.
Lando Norris delivered a flawless display in McLaren’s MCL39 throughout the weekend. He drove impeccably, securing a dominant victory while his teammate and championship rival, Oscar Piastri, finished only fifth. Despite Norris’s outstanding pace and control around the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, he was booed by fans during the race weekend.
Several pundits have weighed in on the incident, and Jacques Villeneuve has now added his perspective. The Canadian described the booing as “odd” and said:
> “That was odd, because I don’t remember booing in our days, Martin, for some reason, or we just were deaf and didn’t hear them. But it was an odd one because it didn’t make any sense. And in Mexico, you know, British driver against an Australian in Mexico. Why should they care? There was no reason for it.”
Following the Mexican Grand Prix, Lando Norris has overtaken Oscar Piastri in the drivers’ standings by a single point. Norris currently holds 357 points, while Piastri has 356. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen sits in third place with 321 points.
### Lando Norris Emphasizes Consistency Amid 2025 F1 Title Battle
While Jacques Villeneuve remains puzzled by the booing, Lando Norris is focusing on maintaining consistency as the 2025 F1 season approaches its climax. With only four Grand Prix events left on the calendar, every point is crucial in this tightly contested drivers’ championship.
Norris commented on his approach going forward:
> “There’s still a long way to go, so I just have to keep doing what I’m doing, keep trying to be consistent against some very quick guys around me. And, yeah, I think that’ll be good. But it doesn’t mean because I’m ahead or behind or whatever that I have to drive or do anything differently.”
The next race on the calendar is Round 21, the Brazilian Grand Prix, held at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace Circuit. In 2024, the race was run under wet conditions, where Norris finished in P6, trailing behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
As the season reaches its final stages, all eyes will be on Norris as he battles to secure his first world title amidst fierce competition.
