Hogs Fall Back on Wednesday
Lean hog futures posted losses ranging from $1.45 to $1.80 during Wednesday’s session. Meanwhile, the USDA’s national base hog price increased by 15 cents in the Wednesday afternoon report, reaching $69.71.
The CME Lean Hog Index was up 31 cents on December 15, settling at $83.30. According to CFTC data, which is now two weeks old, speculative funds held a net long position of 46,650 contracts in lean hog futures and options as of the week ending December 2. This marked a decrease of 3,543 contracts compared to the previous week.
USDA’s pork carcass cutout value from the Tuesday PM report was down by 2 cents to $98.54 per hundredweight (cwt). Among primals, only the butt and picnic cuts reported higher prices.
USDA estimated federally inspected hog slaughter for Tuesday at 494,000 head. The weekly total came to 1.462 million head, which was 9,000 head below the prior week but 927 head above the same week last year.
February 2026 lean hog futures closed at $83.00, down $1.775; April 2026 closed at $87.95, down $1.75; and May 2026 closed at $91.925, down $1.45.
