Here’s how much lucky Mega Millions winner will actually get after hitting $983 million jackpot
A lucky Mega Millions winner in Georgia has scored the massive $989 million jackpot after the longest drought in the history of the game. However, the winner will walk away with substantially less than that headline amount.
Friday’s winning ticket was purchased at a Publix grocery store in Newnan, a town located 35 miles southwest of Atlanta. The jackpot came after 40 days of drawings without a winner. The ticket matched all six numbers: 1, 8, 11, 12, 57, and the Mega Ball 7. According to Mega Millions, the odds of winning were 1 in 290,472,336.
Georgia taxes lottery winnings as income at a rate of 5.14%, in addition to the 24% federal tax withheld by the IRS. This means that out of the $989 million jackpot, the winner will take home about $240 million after taxes if they opt for the lump sum payment, according to USAMega.com.
The full payout over 30 years would amount to approximately $522 million, which breaks down to about $17.4 million per year. Even after taxes, the lump sum would easily allow the winner to purchase Georgia’s most expensive home—a $45 million palatial Georgian-style estate—more than five times over.
Winning tickets in Georgia are valid for 180 days after the drawing and must be redeemed within the state where they were purchased, according to the Georgia Lottery. There is a good chance the public will never learn the winner’s identity, as Georgia winners can request to keep their names confidential for prizes over $250,000.
Following this massive jackpot win, Mega Millions has reset the prize to $50 million. New numbers will be drawn on Tuesday.
In April, the lottery increased the price of tickets from $2 to $5, a move lottery administrators say will improve the chances of winning. Joshua Johnston, lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a statement, “$983 million is the largest jackpot that’s been won since the Mega Millions game changed back in April.”
Stay tuned for the next drawing and good luck to all players!
