Giants Get Big Update on CB Paulson Adebo Injury
The New York Giants are struggling with injuries in their defensive secondary and are unlikely to get healthy in time for their Week 9 game on Sunday. Their No. 1 cornerback, Paulson Adebo, is expected to miss the matchup against the San Francisco 49ers due to a sprained MCL. His status remains week-to-week as he recovers.
Adebo, who is in the first year of a three-year contract with the Giants after starting his career with the New Orleans Saints, has recorded 48 tackles, 41 solo tackles, and one tackle for loss over seven games played. However, he missed the Giants’ recent 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, highlighting the team’s injury woes.
New York (2-6) is currently on a rough patch, having lost two straight games and three of its last four.
### Giants Claim Cornerback Amid Secondary Injuries
The Giants’ secondary depth has been tested heavily. Much-maligned 2023 first-round pick Deonte Banks is expected to start for the second consecutive game. Given the rash of injuries in the secondary, Banks will likely be a key figure moving forward.
Adebo’s injury is more severe than initially believed. Meanwhile, No. 2 cornerback Cor’Dale Flott suffered a concussion during the game against the Eagles and exited early. To bolster the secondary, the Giants claimed cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. Bernard-Converse is expected to contribute mainly on special teams and potentially fill in at cornerback if Flott is unable to clear concussion protocol in time.
During the Eagles game, Banks was joined by Dru Phillips and rookie seventh-round pick Korie Black, each playing over 50% of the defensive snaps. These players are poised to see significant action again as the Giants cope with their depleted secondary.
### Giants’ Secondary May Get a Break Against 49ers’ Injured Offense
While the Giants’ pass defense has struggled—allowing six passing touchdowns over the past five quarters against the Eagles and Denver Broncos—they might catch a break facing a 49ers offense also riddled with injuries.
San Francisco is missing key skill-position players, including both quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Mac Jones nursing injuries, star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and wideouts Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings doubtful for Sunday’s game.
Despite their personnel challenges, the 49ers rank second in the NFL in passing yards per game (259.3), posing a significant test for the Giants’ defense, which ranks 24th in pass defense and recently gave up 427 total yards to the Eagles.
Defending All-Pro tight end George Kittle will be a major challenge. Kittle had his first big game of the season in Week 8 against the Houston Texans, recording four catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. The Giants’ defense recently gave up two touchdown receptions to Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert, underscoring potential vulnerabilities.
San Francisco is also relying heavily on All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, who has topped 100 all-purpose yards in seven of eight games this season. On Sunday against Houston, McCaffrey averaged an impressive 6.2 yards per touch, despite limited touches (eight carries and three receptions), which contributed to the Niners’ loss.
### Outlook
The Giants face a challenging task on Sunday with a severely depleted secondary against a high-powered but injury-plagued 49ers offense. The game will test New York’s depth and resilience as they look to bounce back after recent setbacks.
