Community Rallies to Support Unpaid TSA Workers Amid Government Shutdown
CHICAGO — On Tuesday, TSA agents at O’Hare International Airport received complimentary meals in Terminal 2 as a show of support for Transportation Security Administration workers facing financial hardship due to the ongoing government shutdown.
The meals were prepared early Tuesday morning at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin. “We’re making Mongolian beef with white rice and fried green beans for the community,” said Vee Armer, kitchen manager for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Volunteers came together to prepare free meals for TSA officers who are working without pay as the government shutdown enters its 28th day. This event was organized by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 777, a labor union representing federal government employees, including TSA agents in the Chicago area.
The union highlighted that without their regular paychecks, TSA workers are struggling to cover essential expenses such as housing, transportation, and groceries. Complimentary meals like these provide much-needed relief during this difficult time.
AFGE Local 777 vice president Christine Vitel told WGN-TV, “Their morale is really low right now. They are coming to work with no pay. They are making that hard decision, coming to work with no gas money, no food on the table for their kids, because they believe in their job.”
This initiative not only helps TSA workers save money but also aims to boost morale at Chicago airports amid the uncertainty caused by the shutdown.
Meals will also be provided to TSA workers at O’Hare on Wednesday afternoon. Looking ahead, Local 777 plans to extend their support by feeding TSA workers at Chicago’s Midway International Airport next week, unless the government reopens before then.
