Fayetteville driver, sister charged in crash that killed 3 E.E. Smith HS students
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) – The driver involved in a crash that tragically killed three E. E. Smith High School students was street racing with her sister, Fayetteville Police confirmed to ABC11.
Both women are now facing numerous charges, Fayetteville Police said Tuesday afternoon.
Dymond Nekiya Monroe, 21, of Fayetteville, who was critically injured and the lone survivor of the crash, was charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter, willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and insurance violation.
The crash occurred on October 8 shortly after 7 p.m. on Rosehill Road. It claimed the lives of Nicholas Williams, 17, Trevor Merritt, 17, and Jai-Hyon Elliott, 18. All three were football players at E. E. Smith High School.
Police allege that Monroe and another driver were street racing at the time of the crash. Monroe remains hospitalized at a medical facility.
In addition to the charges filed against Monroe, officers from the Fayetteville Police Department (FPD) Traffic Unit identified an additional vehicle traveling on Rosehill Road simultaneously with the fatal crash. The vehicle, a 2023 Dodge Charger, was seized by the FPD.
The driver of the Charger, Destini Rhinada Genwright, 19, of Fayetteville and Monroe’s sister, was charged with willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and insurance violation.
Genwright is not currently in custody. FPD is encouraging her to turn herself in and has requested that family and friends assist in coordinating this process.
The deadly incident remains under active investigation.
