Embarrassing! Hardik Singh Reveals Fans Ignored Indian Hockey Players To Take Selfie With Dolly Chaiwala
In a major embarrassing moment, the Indian men’s hockey team were overlooked by fans at the airport as they chose to take selfies with social media sensation Dolly Chaiwala instead.
Recalling the incident on the YouTube podcast SMTV, Team India midfielder Hardik Singh shared how he and his teammates went unnoticed by fans despite winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. He said, “I saw it with my own eyes, at the airport. Harmanpreet (Singh), I, Mandeep (Singh); there were 5-6 of us. Dolly Chaiwala was also there. People were getting themselves clicked with him and did not recognise us. We started looking at each other (feeling awkward).”
Hardik further highlighted the achievements of his teammates, adding, “Harmanpreet has scored more than 150 goals, Mandeep has more than 100 field goals,” painting a disappointing picture of the country’s obsession with internet stars.
Despite winning back-to-back medals at the Olympic Games, India’s hockey stars continue to struggle to get the recognition they deserve. Speaking about this, Hardik said, “For an athlete, fame and money is one thing. But when people are watching you and appreciating you, there is no bigger satisfaction than that for an athlete.”
India ended a 41-year podium drought in hockey at the Tokyo Olympics by beating Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match. Earlier this year, they retained their crown at the Paris Olympics after defeating Spain 2-1. These consecutive bronze finishes add to India’s rich Olympic history in the sport, where the team has won eight gold medals between 1928 and 1980.
