Ducks edge Panthers 3-2 in shootout as Quenneville returns to South Florida
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Troy Terry and Mason McTavish scored in a shootout, leading the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.
Leo Carlsson contributed with a goal and an assist, while Cutter Gauthier also found the net, helping the Ducks close out a five-game road trip with a win. This game marked coach Joel Quenneville’s first matchup against his former team.
Quenneville, who coached the Panthers from 2019 to 2021, returned to Sunrise for the first time since resigning in the wake of a sexual-assault scandal involving his 2010 Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks squad. The details of the scandal were revealed in October 2021. As a result, Quenneville was banned from the NHL for nearly three years before taking over as Ducks coach in May. He previously won three Stanley Cup titles during his 10 years with the Blackhawks and last coached the Panthers on October 27, 2021.
Carlsson scored a short-handed goal midway through the second period, extending his point streak to four games. A few minutes later, he assisted on Gauthier’s power-play goal, giving Carlsson a team-leading 11 points this season.
In goal, Lukas Dostal made 31 saves for the Ducks.
For the Panthers, Anton Lundell and Sam Reinhart scored. Reinhart recorded the tying goal—his fifth of the season—with about three minutes left in regulation after Florida had trailed 2-0 midway through the third period. Goalie Daniil Tarasov finished with 15 saves.
The Panthers’ roster has been tested recently due to a string of injuries. They were without forwards Jonah Gadjovich (upper body injury) and Brad Marchand (personal reasons) for this game.
