Dominant Packers Drub Lifeless Vikings In Lambeau Laugher
The Minnesota Vikings are a lifeless team, and after taking a 23-6 beating at the hands of the Green Bay Packers, there’s little hope for the rest of the season. It seems unfair to blame second-year quarterback J. J. McCarthy for all of their problems, but it’s clear that head coach Kevin O’Connell refuses to open up the playbook for him. The head coach has little faith that the second-year quarterback can manage an NFL game at this point in his career. There has been talk about rookie Max Brosmer getting a chance to lead the offense, and there’s no reason he shouldn’t get a starting opportunity at some point in the last six games of the season. McCarthy has simply been overwhelmed in his last three games against the Ravens, Bears and Packers. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur had a plan in place to take advantage of the Vikings’ no-gas offense in case McCarthy was unable to decipher the Green Bay defense. He knew that his offense did not have to do much and the only thing he wanted quarterback Jordan Love to do was keep handing the ball to running backs Emanuel Wilson (107 rushing yards) and Christopher Brooks in order to keep the clock moving. Certainly, Love was able to make some quick pitch and catch completions to keep drives alive, but the Packers did not have to attack downfield with medium- and long-range passes that would have put the ball at risk. McCarthy is simply not up to solid NFL competition at this point. The Vikings tried to attack with their running game and both Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones had some early success. However, the Vikings were able to do nothing with it because O’Connell had no faith McCarthy could diagnose what Micah Parsons (2. 0 sacks) and the Packers defense was doing at any point in the game. Mason had a 22-yard run early in the second quarter that set the Vikings up with a first down at the Green Bay 38. The Vikings were able to gain another first down on the ground during the drive, but when the Vikings faced a 3rd and 1 at the Packers 17 with seemingly any play available, McCarthy was afraid to try anything but a couple of between the tackles runs one of those plays was a tight end sneak and the drive failed. That 3rd down play should have involved an end zone throw to Justin Jefferson or Jordan Addison, but the Vikings wouldn’t even try it. Those conservative calls told LaFleur that his team was going up against a pop-gun offense that was afraid of turning the ball over. The Vikings’ conservative game plan was ruined early in the third quarter when a special teams failure gave the Packers control of the game. Green Bay was leading 10-6 at the start of the second half and the Vikings forced a punt on the opening series of the second half. Second-half error dooms Vikings However, punt returner Myles Price saw Daniel Whelan’s punt fly over his head. Price was hoping the punt would bound into the end zone, but it took a hop back towards the unaware return specialist and bounced off of him. The Packers recovered the muff at the Vikings 5-yard line. Wilson pounded the ball into the end zone two plays later, giving the Packers a 17-6 lead. Since McCarthy was playing against a defense that seemingly knew every Vikings move, he was never able to do anything to get his team back in the game. Once the game got into the fourth quarter, the Vikings were desperate and they threw the ball more often. It was not an effective strategy and McCarthy threw a pair of interceptions and the Packers had an easy victory at Lambeau Field. McCarthy finished the game with brutal numbers, completing 12 of 19 passes for 87 yards with no touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The Vikings (4-7) had high hopes at the start of the year as there was a strong belief inside the organization that McCarthy had all the tools needed to be a solid quarterback and perhaps even a great one. Nothing could be further from the truth and it is not going to happen for the youngest signal caller in the NFL this season. Whether he ever develops into a winning quarterback is now a legitimate question. He is overwhelmed at this point and the Vikings have become one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL.
