DOJ asks judge to drop charges against 2 officers in Breonna Taylor case
The Justice Department on Friday requested that a court drop charges against two former police officers accused of providing false information on a search warrant that led to the fatal 2020 police raid at Breonna Taylor’s apartment.
Federal prosecutors initially brought charges against the officers, Joshua Jaynes and Kyle Meany, in 2022. They alleged that the officers provided false information on the search warrant, which authorized the police entry into Taylor’s Louisville home. Both officers were also charged with civil rights violations.
In a filing submitted on Friday, an attorney from the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division stated that these charges should be dismissed. The department has also informed Taylor’s family of this decision.
A federal judge had previously struck felony charges against Jaynes and Meany twice, reducing them to misdemeanors, most recently in 2025. According to the filing, “The Government undertook a further review of this matter. Based on that review, and in the exercise of its discretion, the Government has determined that this case should be dismissed in the interest of justice.”
It remains to be seen whether the remaining charges will be dropped, as the judge has yet to issue a ruling on the motion.
Breonna Taylor was fatally shot during the 2020 raid when plainclothes Louisville officers served a warrant to search her apartment. The warrant was related to Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, who was alleged to be involved in drug dealing but was not present at the apartment.
During the raid, officers broke down the door to Taylor’s home. Kenneth Walker, Taylor’s then-current boyfriend, believed an intruder was breaking in and fired one shot, which struck an officer in the leg. In response, three other officers fired a total of 32 bullets into the apartment, resulting in Taylor’s death.
