Disney projected to lose $4.3M per day; YouTube TV 24% of subscribers
Nov. 12 (UPI) – A carriage dispute between Disney and YouTube TV is costing Disney approximately $4.3 million per day and could lead to YouTube TV losing a quarter of its subscribers.
The dispute, now in its 13th day as of Thursday, has resulted in YouTube TV, owned by Google, refusing to air ABC, ESPN, and other Disney-owned programming. According to Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne, this blackout is costing Disney about $30 million per week, as reported by The Wrap.
Swinburne initially estimated that the dispute would last 14 days and cost a total of $60 million. However, that timeframe is nearing expiration without a resolution.
The blackout began on October 31 after Disney demanded higher fees from YouTube TV to carry more than 20 of its channels. YouTube TV officials refused to meet these demands but have offered subscribers a $20 credit in response.
Disney claims that YouTube TV is unwilling to pay a fair rate for its programming, while YouTube TV argues that Disney’s rate hike demands are unreasonable.
Morgan Stanley analysts expect the two companies to resolve their differences by the end of the week, according to Variety.
In addition to Disney’s revenue loss, YouTube TV faces the prospect of losing nearly 25% of its subscriber base, based on a survey conducted earlier this week. To mitigate cancellations, YouTube TV began notifying subscribers on Sunday about how to claim the $20 credit to their accounts.
The ongoing dispute highlights ongoing tensions in the streaming industry over programming fees and subscriber retention.
