Delhi Police crack down on illegal immigrants, 25 Bangladeshis held
Aishwarya Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for the South East district, announced the arrest of 25 individuals, including 13 women and 12 men, who were communicating with contacts in Bangladesh through an application, ANI reported.
The initial breakthrough occurred when police intercepted two individuals in Delhi: Hasan Sheikh (35) and Abdul Sheikh (37), both originally from Satkhira district in Bangladesh. Upon questioning, they disclosed that several of their relatives and acquaintances were residing in Kanpur Dehat, according to PTI.
Acting on this information, a police team conducted a raid in Kanpur Dehat and detained 23 more persons. All of them were found living in India without proper documentation. Officials revealed that these individuals had been working in various informal sectors, including ragpicking, farm labour, and other casual daily-wage jobs.
The detainees have been shifted to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s Temporary Detention Centre at Sarai Kale Khan, where legal procedures are currently underway before their deportation, police said, as per PTI.
A senior police officer stated that this operation is part of a larger crackdown on illegal immigration. So far in 2025, 235 Bangladeshi nationals have already been deported from southeast Delhi alone.
“On interrogation, they revealed that several of their relatives and associates were living in Kanpur Dehat. Acting swiftly, the police team conducted a raid and apprehended 23 more Bangladeshi nationals,” the officer added.
All those arrested were working as ragpickers, farm labourers, or engaged in casual occupations, the police confirmed. They remain at the MCD Community Temporary Detention Centre in Sarai Kale Khan as further legal formalities are completed prior to their deportation.
The police will soon deport the arrested suspects to Bangladesh, an official said on Thursday. (With PTI inputs)
