Cuomo says Curtis Sliwa was ‘put on’ the NYC mayoral ballot by party leadership
Public pressure is mounting on Rudy Giuliani-backed candidate Curtis Sliwa to suspend his mayoral campaign, but he refuses to bow out. Sliwa ran unopposed in the Republican primary and remains in the race with just over two weeks to go until Election Day. However, both Sliwa and Andrew Cuomo trail behind Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani in the polls.
Cuomo has criticized Sliwa, labeling him a “perpetual mayoral candidate” in reference to Sliwa’s unsuccessful 2021 bid against current Mayor Eric Adams, who is not seeking reelection. The former New York governor also called Sliwa a “shock jock on local radio” and questioned his qualifications, highlighting the Republican’s lack of relevant government experience.
“But [Sliwa] does take a certain number of votes, and to that extent, he is a spoiler,” Cuomo told Fox News. Furthermore, Cuomo claimed that Sliwa runs a “defunct organization” — the Guardian Angels, a crime prevention nonprofit group known for members wearing red berets. Contrary to this claim, the Guardian Angels are not defunct and remain active today.
Over the weekend, Sliwa rejected calls to end his campaign and instead placed the onus on Cuomo to win votes rather than siphoning Republican support. “Andrew Cuomo failed everybody in that primary. He even admitted it,” Sliwa said on The Nate Friedman Show. “Now he’s basically saying, ‘I can’t win without Sliwa votes.’ Where are your votes?”
Sliwa went on to emphasize his campaign’s legitimacy: “I represent a major party line. I have people running under me — counsel people, judges they put their heart and soul into it. They support me. This is called voting. Since when do we not let people vote?”
In the same interview, Sliwa labeled the former governor a “sexual harasser” and accused him of causing harm to elderly people by admitting COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani remains resilient amidst the attacks from both Cuomo and Sliwa, focusing his campaign on key issues like affordability. Mamdani recently took center stage in the first New York City mayoral debate, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the city’s most pressing challenges.
