Capcom execs took convincing to allow GOG to sell the original Resident Evil games

GOG has made a name for itself over the years as one of the bastions of game preservation, committed to keeping classic games accessible in their original forms. While the Resident Evil franchise is widely available across various platforms, GOG put in a notable effort to ensure that the original games—Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3—could be played exactly as they were initially released.

Interestingly, securing the rights from Capcom to offer these original versions on GOG’s platform was not without its challenges. Marcin Paczynski, GOG’s senior business development manager, recently shared with The Game Business that Capcom was initially bewildered by the concept that there would be demand for the original Resident Evil titles.

Despite the early uncertainties, the collaboration ultimately proved successful. The original Resident Evil games sold well on GOG and received very high review ratings from users. For Paczynski, this positive reception served as a strong validation of GOG’s approach to game preservation and the enduring appeal of classic games.
