Buccaneers cruise to 23-3 win in New Orleans
The Buccaneers leaned heavily on their defense in Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints, as several key offensive players were sidelined due to injuries. Despite the challenges on offense, Tampa Bay’s defense stepped up, forcing four total turnovers en route to a commanding 23-3 victory.
Anthony Nelson was a standout performer, returning an interception for a touchdown in the first half. Earlier in the game, Nelson forced a fumble from Spencer Rattler and later picked him off near the New Orleans four-yard line, returning it all the way to the end zone. Nelson also added two sacks, contributing significantly to the Buccaneers’ defensive dominance.
The Bucs initially thought they had another defensive touchdown when safety Antoine Winfield Jr. returned a fumble for a score. However, an inadvertent whistle negated the play. Winfield would later claim the final takeaway of the game with an interception off rookie quarterback Tyler Shough in the third quarter.
The Saints, struggling with a 1-7 record, pulled starter Spencer Rattler in favor of Shough in the third quarter. Shough went 17-for-30 passing, accumulating 128 yards. Saints head coach Kellen Moore is now likely facing questions about who will start at quarterback against the Rams in Week 9.
On offense, the Buccaneers did just enough to complement their defensive efforts. Sean Tucker scored a touchdown run, and Tampa Bay added three field goals. While the offense’s production was modest, it was enough to secure the win and send the team into their bye week with a 6-2 record.
Looking ahead, the Buccaneers are hopeful to have key offensive pieces like wide receiver Chris Godwin and running back Bucky Irving back on the field for the second half of the season. For now, the defense’s strong performance remains the highlight as Tampa Bay continues its push in this competitive NFL season.
