Bold Prediction Has Giants Landing Twins’ 3.42 ERA Starter
The San Francisco Giants are expected to have a big offseason. After missing the MLB playoffs in 2025, despite pulling off a massive trade for Rafael Devers early in the season, the Giants’ ownership and new head of baseball operations, Buster Posey, are poised to do whatever it takes to bring in new players to improve the team’s roster.
San Francisco’s starting rotation is top-heavy, with Logan Webb and Robbie Ray commanding the top two slots. However, it evens out significantly after those two. Carson Whisenhunt got some innings this season, and Landen Roupp posted a 3.80 ERA over 106 innings. But if the Giants are serious about contending, they might want to consider making a big splash in the trade market to add another depth starter.
### Giants-Twins Trade Idea Sends Joe Ryan to San Francisco
If you remember back in July, the Minnesota Twins completely cleaned house when they traded more than 10 players at the trade deadline. One player who didn’t move but garnered a lot of trade rumors was starter Joe Ryan. Now that MLB’s hot stove season is underway, it’s time to revisit those rumors.
A recent Bleacher Report article by Joel Reuter mentions the Giants exploring a trade to acquire Ryan:
*“The Minnesota Twins waved the white flag with one of the most aggressive fire sales in recent memory at the trade deadline, and there is no reason to think they will stop selling this winter, so Ryan should feature prominently on the wish list of more than a few teams.”*
Ryan also comes with two years of team control, allowing the Giants to assess his performance before making a long-term financial commitment.
### Why Adding Joe Ryan Makes Sense
Over the past few seasons, the San Francisco Giants have tried everything in the offseason to land top names in the market. There’s no reason to think they will stop now, especially when the roster is promising but needs a few final pieces to round it out.
Adding Joe Ryan would provide the Giants’ rotation with the depth it needs, fortifying the pitching staff behind Webb and Ray.
### What Could the Giants Give Up?
With a fairly strong farm system, the Giants certainly have the assets to pull off a deal. It may cost one of their MLB-ready arms like Whisenhunt or Roupp, but top-ranked prospects Josuar Gonzalez and Jhonny Level could also be attractive trade pieces. Top prospect Bryce Eldridge is thought to be off-limits.
Joe Ryan was named to the All-Star team for the first time after a stellar first half this season. Over 30 starts, he posted a 3.42 ERA while striking out 194 batters in 171 innings—a solid performance that should generate significant interest.
The Twins have little reason to hold onto Ryan since they offloaded nearly their entire roster earlier this season. If they have no plans to sign him once he becomes a free agent, it makes sense for them to move on and gain as much prospect capital as possible.
### Looking Ahead to the Giants’ Offseason
The Giants will be one of the most interesting teams to follow this offseason. With a combination of promising young talent and an eagerness to compete, how they approach the trade market—potentially targeting players like Joe Ryan—could determine their trajectory in the coming years.
