**Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s Refusal Sparks Political Backlash**
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently refused to answer certain questions during an ongoing socio-economic and educational survey, triggering criticism from opposition parties. The survey, conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, began on September 22 and is scheduled to conclude on October 7.
Enumerators visited Shivakumar’s residence in Bengaluru’s Sadashivnagar as part of the data collection process. However, the Deputy CM appeared visibly frustrated with the lengthy and intrusive nature of some questions.
**Frustration Over Survey Process**
Shivakumar advised officials to simplify the survey by focusing on essential information such as caste, educational qualifications, and details about government benefits received by households. He openly questioned the relevance of certain questions, particularly those about cattle rearing and gold possession, sarcastically asking if he was expected to “run a poultry business.”
**Opposition Criticizes Congress Government**
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) have strongly condemned the Congress-led government for what they termed a “confused and poorly planned” survey exercise.
State BJP chief BY Vijayendra claimed that Shivakumar’s reaction highlighted the confusion surrounding the survey. He also accused the government of rushing into the exercise without proper preparation, particularly criticizing its timing in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement to include caste enumeration in the upcoming national census.
**JDS Joins BJP in Condemning Survey**
The Janata Dal (Secular) also joined the BJP’s critique, underscoring Shivakumar’s refusal to answer several survey questions. The JDS alleged that Shivakumar rejected the caste census survey model and the questions crafted by “Rahul Gandhi and team” without offering any proper explanation.
As political tensions escalate around the survey, the efficacy and intent of this exercise continue to be hotly debated in Karnataka’s political landscape.
