**Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has declined to answer certain questions in the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties.**
The survey, initiated on September 22 and scheduled to conclude on October 7, is being conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes. Recently, enumerators visited Shivakumar’s residence in Bengaluru’s Sadashivnagar to collect data.
Shivakumar appeared visibly frustrated with the length and personal nature of the questionnaire. He urged officials to “keep it simple” and concentrate on essential information such as caste, educational qualifications, and government benefits availed by households. He also questioned the relevance of inquiries about cattle rearing and gold possession, rhetorically asking if he was expected to run a poultry business.
The Deputy Chief Minister’s reaction has sparked strong criticism from the opposition. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described the survey as a “confused and poorly planned” exercise. State BJP chief BY Vijayendra asserted that Shivakumar’s response highlights the confusion caused by the survey. He further accused the Congress government of rushing into the initiative without proper preparation and criticized its timing, especially following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to include caste enumeration in the national census.
Joining the BJP’s censure, the Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) also criticized the Congress government over the survey. The party highlighted that Shivakumar himself refused to answer multiple questions posed by the enumerators. The JDS alleged that Shivakumar rejected the caste census survey model and the questions developed by “Rahul Gandhi and team,” without providing clear explanations.
As the survey continues, the controversy surrounding its execution and political implications remains a focal point in Karnataka’s political discourse.
