Bill Maher Warns Democrats About Threat Posed By Socialist Zohran Mamdani
Comedian Bill Maher issued a stern warning to the Democratic Party regarding its New York City mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, during Friday’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher.” Maher emphasized that the party is at a crossroads between moving toward the center or lurching left. He noted that if Mamdani were to defeat former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on November 4, it would have “very important national implications.”
Maher described the broader significance of the election, saying, “This is not just New York that’s on the ballot. I think the whole Democratic Party in the country is on the ballot.” Although he called Mamdani “a sweet guy” earlier in the discussion, Maher expressed concern over the party’s direction. He added, “And the whole country will be looking at this race to see which way are the Democrats going to go.”
Maher went on to compare Mamdani and Cuomo, stating, “No, Andrew Cuomo may not be that exciting and that inspirational, but for a party that said, ‘We want to get back to normal,’ he’s kind of normal.” Cuomo is running as an Independent after losing the Democratic mayoral primary on June 24 to Mamdani but remains a registered Democrat. The race also includes Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, who consistently polls in third place.
Discussing the current state of the Democratic Party, Maher said, “The Democrats, let’s face it, they’re kind of split right now. There’s the far-left version that did not do too well in recent elections, and then people like the governor say, ‘We got to come back to the middle, common sense.’” He was referring to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who also appeared as a guest on the episode. Maher added, “And whenever this discussion comes up, this is what you hear a lot: some issue where the Democrat says, ‘Look, I’m not with the far left and this is where you know you can trust me that I’m not.’”
During the show, Maher sparred with former Biden administration White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield. Bedingfield called the prospect of Mamdani winning “a good thing” for the Democratic Party and dismissed concerns about the socialist nominee as “race-baiting.” She also criticized Cuomo over his sexual harassment allegations, which led to his resignation as New York governor in 2021.
Bedingfield argued that Mamdani’s win could energize voters who have not been enthusiastic about the Democratic Party in recent years. “I think that if Mamdani wins, with a coalition of voters who have been not all that excited about the Democratic Party over the last few years, I think that’s a good thing for Democrats,” she said. “And I think if you’re in a purple district, say you disagree with some of the things that he does…”
